Rates from $745 per night – Two night minimum*
Available now until April 30, 2019

It’s never too cold to fish on Vancouver Island, especially with the prized steelhead and rainbow trout now in season. Through our exclusive partnership with Cowichan River Lodge, we’ve prepared a full schedule for you to experience the best fishing the area has to offer.

This two-night package includes luxurious accommodations at Villa Eyrie Resort, gourmet dining and a complete day out on the water with an expert fishing guide.

Our package extensions include fishing on multiple days, each with different locations, equipment or techniques to focus on catching separate species.

Fishing on the Cowichan

Only 45 minutes by car from Villa Eyrie Resort, the Cowichan is a true gem of a river. Tucked away from any major towns and with no motorized boats allowed, the waters are serene and underfished so you have a high chance of a catch. As you drift downstream, you may also spot eagles, kingfishers, elk, deer and a host of other wildlife.

Rain or shine, there are always opportunities for a great experience. In one of our drift boats or pontoons, our knowledgeable guides can take you to one of several different pools where you can battle it out against a mighty steelhead, or reel in some rainbow, brown or cutthroat trout right next to the dramatic Skutz Falls.

Please note that for conservation purposes, the Cowichan is a catch-and-release river. Moreover, low water levels during the summer months can affect fishing on the Cowichan (although this unlikely to occur from the end of September to the beginning of May when there’s regular rainfall and a very high chance of a catch). In the event of low water, we can arrange fishing on some of the other fantastic Vancouver Island rivers such as the San Juan and Harris Rivers.

Full package from $745* per night includes:

  • Dinner[1] for two each night at Summit Restaurant, including your choice of appetizer, main and dessert, all specially prepared by our Michelin-trained culinary team

    • All equipment and drift boat rentals
    • Expert fishing guide throughout

Each Additional Night at $1,145* per night:

With a myriad of experiences available, we’d love for you to spend multiple days out on the Cowichan River so you can try your luck at both steelhead and freshwater trout along with the different fishing techniques required for both. Moreover, due to specific conditions on any given day, our guides may opt for one fish or another.

With each additional night that you stay, you will be treated to:

  • Breakfast[1] for two each morning at Summit Restaurant
  • A full-day fishing experience with all required licenses, equipment and a hot lunch
  • A three-course dinner at the Resort

Shuttle service to the Lodge and back to the Resort can be provided at an additional per diem cost. Please contact the hotel to arrange this separately.

Steelhead vs. Rainbow Trout

While both names technically denote the same species of Pacific trout, there is a vast difference between steelhead and rainbow trout in both their behavior and their size, with the former able to throw itself out of the water in an escape, thus offering a dogged fight for even a veteran fly fisherman.

What distinguishes the two subspecies is that the steelhead is a sea-run fish, meaning that it hatches upriver before swimming down into the ocean for most of its life before returning home to spawn, while rainbow trout remain entirely in freshwater. It’s this saltwater environment that make the steelhead stronger, more aggressive and often double the length of a rainbow trout.
